Northeast Spine & Wellness has been serving clients in Clifton Park and Albany for more than 30 years. Founder Dr. Joseph S. Gulyas is a chiropractor and holistic healer with a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from New York Chiropractic College and a Bachelor of Science degree from Skidmore College, in Saratoga Springs.
In his teens, Gulyas got his first job in a large hospital working as an orderly. “I was the tall guy in the white coat and lots of people often sought my advice, mistaking me for a doctor,” he recalls. “In that setting, I realized I wanted to be a healthcare provider, but definitely not in that setting. I wanted to help people, but not the way I saw it happening there.”
Tired of the hospital protocols, Gulyas shifted gears and became an emergency medical technician (EMT). “It was a crazy world. There were so many medical crises that needed to be dealt with every day,” he recalls. “While I knew I didn’t want to make a career out of being an EMT, it ended up being really good for me. At 19 years old, I learned quickly how not to be afraid to make a decision.”
When Gulyas was 21, his father went into the hospital, which turned out to be a pivotal experience for his future career. “He was healthy one day, and the next day, diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. It just didn’t make sense,” he says. That’s when Gulyas decided to devote his life to helping others with a more holistic approach to wellness, and chiropractic became the perfect fit.
Gulyas feels confident that he can help anyone maintain a better quality of life at any age. He says, “Health is simple. And it doesn’t have to be expensive. You just need a vision of where you want to go, and a partnership to help you get there. I think more and more of us have realized we’ve been bamboozled by the traditional Western medicine model. I often use this analogy: with Western medicine, you’re offered a red sweater and told how great you look in that sweater. What you don’t realize at the time is that everybody gets that red sweater. There aren’t any colors, no designs or patterns. Everybody is given the same sweater.”
Gulyas believes that doctors should treat each patient from a holistic perspective. That’s why he loves chiropractic care. “We do things way differently than the Western medical model. That model is not intuitive. With chiropractic care, we use our intuition,” he explains. His holistic model often comprises a three-month self-care action plan involving chiropractic care, supplements and other lifestyle choices to help get a patient’s health back on track. “Together, we come up with our plan. You make the commitment to yourself to get healthy, and I’ll be there to guide you along the way. Everything is a journey, and when we go on this journey together, we get great results,” he advises.
Gulyas makes himself accessible to his patients. “Does the work day start early for you? I’ll come in early, so you can make it to work on time. Can’t come in until after work? I’ll stay late. The point I want to drive home is that I’m here for my patients and they love that reliability. Invest in yourself. Commit to yourself. I’ll be right there beside you. You’ve got to be excited about what you do. It’s your legacy. I love what I do. Every day I show up, get a feel for the day, how it’s going to flow and what I need to focus on and then I just embrace it.”
Northeast Spine & Wellness boasts one of the largest dispensaries of whole food supplements by Standard Process, as well as protein food supplies by Ideal Protein. “We are dedicated to being of service to the people of the community, and our philosophy is, ‘Good health is attainable and affordable,’ despite what society tells us,” says Gulyas. “Medical tests and making poor decisions about your health are expensive, but good health is within the grasp of everyone with a little bit of guidance. We want to serve more people and let them know the benefits of our culture within the office, where people are enjoying the benefits of good health well into their ninth and even 10th decade.”
