Dr. Frederick Dreher, a holistic dentist certified through American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and owner of the new Integrative Sleep Center, inside his Ballston Spa office, is now treating obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA occurs when the tissues of the mouth and throat collapse into and block the airway, causing an individual to temporarily stop breathing while they are asleep. “As many as one in five individuals suffer from this condition and don’t even know it,” says Dreher. Side effects include daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, lack of concentration, dry mouth, sore throat and drowsy driving.
Traditionally, to be diagnosed with OSA, an individual needed to spend a night at a sleep lab throughout the night. “A C-PAP machine was the recommended treatment for this condition, but many patients find the mask is uncomfortable, loud, cumbersome and claustrophobic,” adds Dreher. “Thus, noncompliance is widespread and as many as 20 to 50 percent discontinue its use after one year.”
Dreher’s solution involves an oral appliance that is comfortable silent and portable. Plus, testing is never done in a lab, but in the comfort of the patient’s own home.
